Service Design 2020 Food Experience
Population growth and climate change have accelerated since the Millennium Drought in the early 2000s, creating a new challenge for water supply.  Therefore, permanent water-saving rules have been in place for Melbourne since water restrictions were lifted in 2012. Target 155 is a water-efficiency initiative designed to encourage us to limit water consumption to 155 litres per person, per day.

Here in Melbourne, we would like to promote our core values through Service Design, aiming to be zero-waste. Re-using coffee cups, plates, straws etc. And one of the ways we are going to do this is through self-service at the conference - 'Wash against Waste'.

Attendees will not be using any single- use items, no disposables and will be washing their plates and cutlery through a wash station at the conference. We believe this is a good opportunity to educate attendees from all over the world.

Washing Station

Use the portable sinks, which is easy to install and collect grey water.

The portable sinks are designed to sustainability. The tap water of portable sink has to
be pressed to restart in every 10 seconds by using sensor which in case of water waste. And the staff will replace the container during the break.

Dish detergents, aprons, scrubber sponges and gloves will be provided.

The washing station will be connected to an interactive installation, which shows them where the grey water goes. The grey-water must be used within 24 hours of collection unless it has been treated.

If we just reduce our water use by using two thirds of a bucket per day, we can hit our
target of 155 litres per person per day or less. And then we can all continue
to enjoy Melbourne’s famous lifestyle with enough water for this and future generations. This information will also be shown in the installation screen, so the attendees will understand what they do really benefits the environment.
Return Station

We don’t want the attendees feel obligated about self-wash. That’s why we have a return station besides the wash station.

Attendees can simply put their dirty plates on return cart. And the staff will collect the dirty plates and put them into the dishwasher.

Installation Animation
The main part of the installation is to demonstrate the entire process of where the grey water goes. Starting from the wash station, then the pipe, after that, the grey water will water the plants around RMIT campus. And there will be a staff on the side to introduce Target 155 and explain to the attendees to understand what they are doing is something good to the environment. Every time when the attendees hit 100ml water, graphic bubbles will pop up with notification of recognition. At the end of the wash, the screen will show a summary of the total amount of water being saved.
