Yarra River Stamp Collection
This series of stamps uses different colour tones to represent
different stages of the condition of the river from the 19th century
till now as well as a hope for the future.
First stamp:
Charles Grimes, during his exploration in 1803 he named it
“Freshwater River”. He declared it to be “the most eligible place
for a settlement that I have seen”.
Second stamp:
Development caused problems of industri- al pollution, the river
was declared undrinkable after only 20 years.
Third stamp:
Annual Henley-on-Yarra regattas became Melbourne’s high points
of colour and activity, which formed the opening day of Melbourne’s
new river festival 'Moomba'.
Forth stamp:
Dolphin appears in the river symbolizes the river becomes better
in terms of water condition.
